A passport is the primary travel and identity document for Indian citizens, issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India through the Passport Seva portal. This page explains how to apply for a fresh Indian passport online, the fees, and the documents you need.

Who can apply: every valid Indian citizen is eligible to apply for a passport, provided they have a clean police record and the documents required to prove date of birth and address — such as Aadhaar card, PAN card and other accepted proofs.

The fees are approximately ₹1,500 for a normal adult passport (36 pages) and ₹2,000 for a 60-page passport, ₹1,000 for a minor, and ₹3,000 for replacement of a lost or damaged passport; the Tatkal (urgent) service costs an additional ₹2,000, and a Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) costs ₹500.

How to apply: register on the Passport Seva portal, fill the online application, pay the fee and book an appointment, then visit the Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) on the appointment date with your original documents. This is followed by police verification, after which the passport is printed and dispatched to your address.
