Government jobs set a minimum and maximum age limit for each post. To make recruitment fairer, many categories of candidates are given age relaxation — extra years above the upper age limit. Knowing whether you qualify for relaxation can keep you eligible for far more vacancies.
How age is calculated
Your age is almost always counted as on a fixed cut-off date mentioned in the notification — not the date you apply. Always check the exact cut-off date in your own notification, and calculate your age on that day.
Typical age relaxation by category
The most common relaxations (over and above the upper age limit) are:
- OBC (non-creamy layer): usually +3 years
- SC / ST: usually +5 years
- Persons with Disabilities (PwD): often +10 years (and more when combined with another category)
- Ex-servicemen: relaxation as per service rules
- EWS (Economically Weaker Section): normally no age relaxation — EWS gives reservation, but the upper age limit stays the same as for the general category
For example, if the upper age limit for a post is 30 years, an OBC candidate may be eligible up to 33, and an SC/ST candidate up to 35 — subject to the rules of that specific recruitment.
Other relaxations you may be eligible for
- Women candidates — some state recruitments give additional relaxation.
- Government / departmental employees — relaxation based on years of service.
- Domicile of specific states like J&K during certain periods, widows/divorced women, and other special categories defined in the notification.
Important points to remember
- You must hold a valid certificate (caste, PwD, etc.) to claim any relaxation.
- OBC candidates generally need a non-creamy-layer certificate within validity.
- Relaxations can sometimes be combined (for example, SC + PwD), as allowed by the rules.
