How to Resize a Photo to 20 KB, 50 KB or 100 KB for Online Forms (Free)

Updated 11 Oct 2026 Β· Sarkari Core

"File size must be between 20 KB and 50 KB." Almost every online application form has a line like this, and a photo straight from a phone camera β€” often 2–5 MB β€” is far too big. This guide shows how to bring any photo or signature down to an exact KB range, for free, without the picture looking blurred.

First, read the three requirements

Every form sets three separate limits. Note all three from the notification before you start:

RequirementWhat it meansTypical photo valueTypical signature value
File sizeHow much storage the file takes (KB)20–50 KB10–20 KB
DimensionsWidth Γ— height in pixels or cmAbout 3.5 cm Γ— 4.5 cm (passport style)About 3.5 cm Γ— 1.5 cm
FormatFile typeJPG / JPEGJPG / JPEG

The typical values are only a guide β€” SSC, railway, banking and state forms each set their own, so always use the numbers in your notification.

Why the file size changes when you change other settings

Two things decide the KB size of a JPG:

  1. Dimensions β€” a 200 Γ— 230 pixel photo has far fewer pixels than a 3000 Γ— 4000 phone photo, so it is much smaller.
  2. Quality (compression) β€” lowering the JPG quality removes detail you mostly cannot see, shrinking the file further.

The trick is to set the dimensions first, then adjust quality until the file lands inside the KB range. Reducing quality alone on a huge photo makes it blocky; reducing dimensions first keeps it sharp.

Step by step with the SarkariCore Photo Resizer

Our Photo Resizer works entirely in your browser β€” your photo is never uploaded to any server.

  1. Choose your photo. Open the tool and select the photo from your phone or computer.
  2. Set width and height. Enter the dimensions from your notification. You can type them in pixels, centimetres or inches.
  3. If you used cm or inches, set the DPI. DPI decides how many pixels one centimetre becomes. If the notification doesn't say, "100 DPI β€” Common Portals" usually works; 300 DPI makes a larger file.
  4. Move the quality slider. The tool shows the resulting size in KB live as you move it. Slide until the size is inside your range β€” aim for the middle (for 20–50 KB, around 35 KB), not the edge.
  5. Download the JPG and upload it to the form.

For signatures, use the Signature Resizer, which is tuned for the wide, short shape of a signature.

Common upload errors and how to fix them

Error messageFix
"File size exceeds maximum limit"Lower the quality slider, or reduce the dimensions slightly.
"File size is less than minimum"Raise the quality slider. If it is already at maximum, increase the dimensions or use 150 DPI.
"Invalid file format"Save as JPG/JPEG. iPhone photos are often HEIC β€” set Settings β†’ Camera β†’ Formats β†’ "Most Compatible" so new photos are saved as JPG.
"Invalid dimensions"Re-enter the exact width and height from the notification.
Photo looks stretchedCrop the photo to the right shape first (passport photos are taller than they are wide).

Tips for a photo that won't be rejected later

  • Use a recent photo with a plain, light background and your face clearly visible.
  • No caps, dark glasses or filters (spectacles are usually fine if there is no glare).
  • Keep a printed copy of the same photo β€” many exams ask you to paste the identical photo on the admit card or at verification.
  • Sign on white paper with a black or blue pen, and crop tightly around the signature before resizing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 20 KB photo too blurry to use?

No. At passport-photo dimensions (around 200 Γ— 230 pixels), 20–50 KB is enough for a clear face. Blur happens when a very large photo is squeezed to 20 KB without first reducing its dimensions.

Do I need an app?

No. The resizer runs in any mobile or desktop browser β€” no app, no sign-up.

Is it safe to use an online resizer for my photo?

With our tool, the image is processed on your own device and is never uploaded. Be careful with sites that upload your photo and ID documents to their servers.

Note: Size and dimension rules differ between recruitments and can change between cycles. Always use the values given in the official notification of the form you are filling.
