Documents Required for Government Job Applications in India

Updated 03 Jun 2026 · Sarkari Core

Government job applications are verified strictly, and missing or incorrect documents are one of the most common reasons candidates lose a place at the verification stage. Keeping the right documents ready — and in the right format — before you apply makes the whole process smooth. Here is a complete checklist.

Identity and basic documents

  • Aadhaar card — now the most commonly required identity proof.
  • PAN card, Voter ID, Passport or Driving Licence as additional photo ID.
  • A recent passport-size photograph and your scanned signature in the required size.

Educational documents

  • Class 10 (matriculation) marksheet and certificate — also the standard proof of date of birth.
  • Class 12 marksheet and certificate.
  • Graduation / post-graduation marksheets and degree, if the post requires them.
  • Diploma / ITI / professional certificates where applicable.

Category and special certificates

If you are claiming reservation or relaxation, keep the relevant valid certificate ready:

  • Caste certificate (OBC / SC / ST) from a competent authority. OBC candidates usually need a non-creamy-layer certificate that is within validity.
  • EWS certificate for Economically Weaker Section candidates.
  • PwD (disability) certificate for persons with benchmark disabilities.
  • Ex-servicemen documents, if applicable.
  • Domicile / residence certificate for state-level recruitments that require it.

Other documents you may need

  • Experience certificates, for posts requiring work experience.
  • Sports or NCC certificates, where relaxation or weightage is given.
  • A valid email ID and mobile number — not documents, but essential for the application.

How to keep your documents ready

For online forms you will mostly need clear scanned copies, so:

  • Scan each document in good light and save it as a PDF or JPG.
  • Keep file sizes within the limits the form allows (often 50–200 KB per document).
  • Make sure text in scanned marksheets and certificates is clearly readable.
  • Keep both digital copies and a set of printed photocopies ready for document verification.

A simple folder — one digital, one physical — with all these documents will save you stress every time a new vacancy opens. Always carry the originals to document verification, as photocopies are checked against them.
